How to Watch IPTV on a TV with AirPlay

AirPlay and mirroring are not the same thing

This distinction causes most of the disappointment, so it is worth getting straight before anything else.

Screen mirroring copies your entire display to the television. The phone is doing all the decoding and then re-encoding the whole screen, continuously. It is why mirrored video looks soft, runs slightly behind, drains the battery and shows your notifications on the TV.

AirPlay video hands the stream itself to the television, which then plays it directly. Your phone becomes the remote control. The picture is full quality, the phone can lock, and you can use it for something else without interrupting playback.

You want the second one. In Momnt IPTV, use the AirPlay control inside the player rather than the mirroring button in Control Centre.

Sending a stream to the television

1. Put both devices on the same network

   The iPhone or iPad and the Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible television must be on the same Wi-Fi network. This is the cause of most missing devices — a phone on the 5 GHz band and a TV on a guest network will not see each other.

2. Start playing the channel first

   Open the channel or film in Momnt and let it play. AirPlay attaches to an active stream, so the control does what you expect only once there is something to send.

3. Tap the AirPlay control in the player

   It appears in the playback controls. Do not use Control Centre’s Screen Mirroring — that gives you the mirrored, re-encoded version described above.

4. Choose your television

   The stream moves to the TV and your device becomes the remote. Pausing, changing channel and browsing the guide all continue to work from your hand.

5. Lock the phone if you want

   Because the television is doing the playing, you can lock the device or use another app without stopping the stream.

When no devices appear

• Different networks. The commonest cause by a wide margin. Check that the phone is not on mobile data, and that neither device is on a guest or IoT network.
• Network isolation on the router. Many routers have a client isolation setting that stops devices seeing each other. It is often on by default on guest networks and sometimes on the main one.
• AirPlay disabled on the television. Third-party sets with AirPlay 2 usually have a setting for it, and some ship with it off.
• The TV is asleep in a way that drops it off the network. Wake it fully and check again.
• Restart both. Genuinely worth doing before anything more involved — AirPlay discovery gets stuck reasonably often.

When it stutters on the TV but not on the phone

AirPlay adds a second wireless hop, so it is more sensitive to a marginal network than local playback is.

• Put the Apple TV or television on Ethernet if you can. It removes half the wireless path in one step and fixes this more often than anything else.
• Use the 5 GHz band for the phone. A 2.4 GHz connection that is fine for local playback frequently is not enough for AirPlay on top of it.
• Check the distance between the router and both devices, not just the phone.
• If the same channel also stutters when played locally, the problem is the stream or your provider, and AirPlay is not involved. Work through the buffering guide instead.

The alternative: an Apple TV app

AirPlay is the right answer for occasional viewing on the big screen. If the television is where you watch most of the time, a native app on the device itself is better — no second hop, and a remote designed for the job.
